It is one of the most common decisions CPG Brand Managers have to make when planning a consumer promotion. What face value dollar amounts should they set for their online coupons and cashback offers?

Set the offer value too low and consumers may ignore the offer. Set it too high and it may erode margins and even affect a consumer’s perception of the product’s value.

Getting the offer value right is a strategic decision that sits at the intersection of Brand positioning, consumer psychology and product economics. Understanding the factors that drive this decision separates promotions that achieve goals from those that move product but miss the mark.

It is important to match the offer’s value to its promotional objectives

Probably the most important principle in setting an offer’s face value is that the optimal amounts depend directly on the objective the Brand is trying to achieve with the promotion.

A promotion designed to drive first-time trial of a new product requires a different offer structure than one designed to reward repeat purchasers or win back lapsed consumers.

A larger discount or even full purchase reimbursement may make sense when asking consumers to take a risk on something completely unknown. But a 10% to 15% discount may be enough when rewarding existing loyal consumers.

How an offer is communicated to consumers is also important. New customer acquisition offers distributed to the mass market will require different discounts than lift or retention offers communicated privately to an email list of loyal consumers.

Matching the offer value to the consumer’s decision context and the promotion’s target consumers can mean the difference between a promotion that achieves its goals and one that falls flat.

Other important factors to consider when setting offer values include:

1. Product price and profit margins
Set a discount that delivers enough savings to capture attention but not so high as to hinder margins. The relative value of the discount is important since $1 Off $2.50, is significantly more impactful than $1 Off $5.00, consumers understand this. Higher priced products or product bundles support larger coupon values.

2. Competitive brand offers in market
Brands should constantly monitor competing brand’s promotions to ensure their own offers are attractive enough to influence purchases. In crowded categories, and difficult economic times a stronger incentive will help your Brand stand out.

3. Consumer price sensitivity
Consider how strongly shoppers respond to price reductions in your Brand’s product category. Research shows that price-sensitive consumers will be more likely to switch brands or try a new product when the savings are compelling. These ‘new trial’ consumers may develop into long term loyal consumers.

4. Product purchase frequency and basket size
Consider how often consumers buy the product and how much they typically spend per transaction. Larger incentives or multi-unit offers at key times of the year can encourage pantry loading as well new product trial, increased basket size, or accelerating repeat purchases.

5. Campaign budget and return on investment considerations
Brands must balance the coupon value against their budgets, expected redemption rate, and incremental sales potential. The goal is to generate positive margin incremental sales, rather than simply subsidizing existing purchases.

Setting the right online coupon and cashback offer face values requires balancing consumer wants with Brand realities. Coupons that deliver meaningful savings while protecting margins will help drive new consumer trial, encourage repeat purchases and strengthen the Brand’s overall performance.
